About Ballina Bombers
Origins and Founding
The Ballina Bombers were formed in 1984 as one of four foundation clubs of the Summerland Australian Football League, alongside Byron, the Goonellabah Swans and the Lismore Kangaroos. The Bombers played home games at Fripp Oval in Ballina from that first season, and are one of only two clubs, together with the Byron Magpies, to have competed continuously under the same identity throughout the Summerland Australian Football League's entire 1984 to 2011 history.

Club History
Across 27 seasons in the SAFL, Ballina won five senior premierships, in 1995, 1996, 2002, 2005 and 2006, and was runner-up on seven further occasions. When the competition transitioned into AFL Queensland's QFA Northern Rivers division in 2012, the Bombers reached grand finals in 2016, 2018 and 2019, each time losing to the Byron Magpies, before the division folded after the 2020 season. Senior football briefly shifted north in 2024, with a joint Ballina-Byron Bay venture playing a single season in a Gold Coast competition. Football returned to the Northern Rivers in 2025 when AFL Queensland launched the pilot Northern Rivers Cup, and the undefeated Bombers won the inaugural grand final over Lismore Swans 7.9 (51) to 2.2 (14) at Oakes Oval, as reported by the Lismore Times. Ballina defended the title in 2026 under player-coach Jai Stafford, again reaching the grand final against Lismore Swans, who this time claimed the premiership for their first flag since 2011.

Home Ground
Fripp Oval on Canal Road in Ballina has been the Bombers' home ground since the club's formation in 1984, and remains the base for training and home matches today. As part of the Northern Rivers Cup format, the Bombers hosted a full round of fixtures at Fripp Oval on 30 May 2026, welcoming Byron Bay, Brunswick Heads, Casino, Lennox Head, Lismore and Nimbin, while the 2025 and 2026 grand finals were both played at the neutral Oakes Oval in Lismore.

Community and Programs
Beyond the senior men's team, the Ballina Bombers field a women's side and run a dedicated Ballina Bombers Junior AFL Club for Auskick and youth grades, giving local children a pathway into the sport from an early age. The 2025 and 2026 Northern Rivers Cup seasons were built around growing grassroots participation, drawing in past senior players, former juniors, AFL Masters players and converts from other codes, reflecting the club's role as a genuine community hub in Ballina.

Ballina
Ballina is a Richmond River town in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, and the seat of the Ballina Shire local government area. The town recorded a population of 18,532 at the 2021 census, within a wider urban area of 46,190 that also takes in Lennox Head. It sits roughly 32 kilometres from Lismore and 34 kilometres from Byron Bay, and is best known as a beachside gateway to Byron Bay, home to the Big Prawn and popular river and ocean fishing spots.
