About Cairns City Lions Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Cairns City Lions Australian Football Club traces its roots to 1969, when City United was formed as a breakaway from the North Cairns Tigers. Midway through the 1969 season, City United replaced Babinda in the Cairns Australian Football League's reserves competition, before being elevated to senior status in 1973. The club subsequently became known as the Cairns City Cobras and then, in 2011, the Cairns City Lions - formed through the merger of the Cairns City Cobras and the Redlynch Lions Junior AFC. This merger brought together two established organisations to create a club covering an area from Holloways Beach to Stratford, Brinsmead to Redlynch, and Smithfield to Machans Beach.
Club History
The Lions and their predecessor clubs have won four AFL Cairns senior premierships: in 1982, 1983, 2021, and 2022. The back-to-back 2021 and 2022 flags represented a modern era resurgence for the club. Several AFL players have emerged from the club's history, including Mark West (Footscray), Che Cockatoo-Collins (Essendon and Port Adelaide), Jason Roe (Brisbane Lions), and Peter Yagmoor (Collingwood). In more recent years, AFLW players Laquoiya and Litonya Cockatoo-Motlap (Port Adelaide Power) also came through the club's programs.
Home Ground
The Lions play their home games at the Holloways Beach Sporting Complex in Holloways Beach, a coastal suburb on the northern outskirts of Cairns. The ground serves as the base for both the senior and junior programs and is well connected to the residential growth corridors north of Cairns city.
Community and Programs
Cairns City Lions fields senior men's and women's teams in the AFL Cairns competition, alongside a strong junior program. The club has a deliberate youth policy, with junior pathways feeding directly into the senior side. The merged structure created by the 2011 consolidation with Redlynch Lions Junior AFC has strengthened the club's ability to develop young talent from across the northern Cairns catchment. AFL Cairns, which was established in 1956, operates across the Far North Queensland region and is widely regarded as the strongest regional Australian rules competition in Queensland.
Cairns
Cairns is a city in Far North Queensland, located approximately 1,700 kilometres north of Brisbane. It is the regional centre for the Cairns Regional Council area and serves as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforests. The city is home to Cazalys Stadium, which has hosted both AFL Cairns competition matches and exhibition AFL games. The Cairns region supports a vibrant community football culture underpinned by AFL Cairns, which has operated since 1956.
The Lions compete in the AFL Cairns competition and call the Holloways Beach Sporting Complex home. Visit the club at cairnscitylions.com.au, follow them on Facebook, or find them on Instagram.
Footy Banner Information
Material: All Footy Banners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using permanent inks which will not run, even if they get wet. They are fully recyclable.
How to Use: We recommend taping broomsticks or plastic pipe to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it. If you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through. There are instructions and images for how to cut these in the FAQ section below.
On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon! This is why we do not pre-cut them, and also so you can get photographs with your intact banner when it looks at it's best.
Tip: Some players choose to only cut one weak spot in their banner so it can be saved and displayed later by taping it back together on the back.Pro Tip: Cut the weak spot to one side of the mascot or team logo so it stays intact as well!
Return and Refund Policy
As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.
