About Moreton Bay Lions Australian Football Sports Club
Origins and Founding
The Moreton Bay Lions Australian Football Sports Club was formed in 1986 as the Southern Districts Australian Football Club, playing their first season in 1987 in the Sunshine Coast competition. In 1988 the club became incorporated as the Caboolture and Southern Districts Australian Football Club Inc. The club's original playing strip drew inspiration from Essendon's guernsey, earning them the early nickname the "Bombers". In 1992 the club adopted the Brisbane Bears' uniform and nickname, then followed the merger of Brisbane and Fitzroy in 1996 to become the Lions - the identity the club carries today. In December 2014 the name was formally changed from Caboolture to Moreton Bay, reflecting the club's broader regional identity.
Club History
The Moreton Bay Lions were highly competitive throughout the 1990s, finishing as runners-up on several occasions before winning their first senior premiership in 1999 in the Brisbane AFL Division 2 competition. A standout year came in 2019 when, under coach John Soccio, the Lions claimed the QFA Division 3 premiership by 64 points over Wynnum Vikings, with captain Rhys Nickalls booting 15 goals for the Best on Ground award. Further flags followed in 2020 and 2021 when the Lions won back-to-back QFA Division 2 North premierships, earning promotion into QFA Division 1. The women's program has also excelled, with QWAFA premiership success in 2014 and a QFAW Division 1 flag in 2023. The club now celebrates 40 seasons of football in the Moreton Bay region.
Home Ground
The Moreton Bay Lions are based at the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex in Burpengary, a facility with a capacity of 8,000 people that serves as the hub for all the club's senior and junior programs. By mid-1990 the council had prepared an initial playing field on Beerburrum Road adjacent to the Historical Village, and club members and volunteers built the first clubhouse and changerooms. The Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex represents a significant upgrade on those early facilities and provides a home worthy of a club that competes at QAFLW state league level.
Community and Programs
The Moreton Bay Lions run a comprehensive football program catering to every age and ability - from Roy's Fun Footy and Over 50s, to social and serious players, men, women, boys, and girls. The club fields senior men's and women's teams, an extensive junior competition, and youth development programs. The women's team competes in the QAFLW State League, reflecting the high level of the club's investment in women's football. The Lions' motto of inclusivity makes it one of the more diverse football communities in South East Queensland.
Burpengary
Burpengary is a suburb in the Moreton Bay Region of South East Queensland, located approximately 34 kilometres north of the Brisbane CBD along the Bruce Highway. It is one of the fastest-growing communities in Queensland, with significant residential development driven by families seeking affordable housing north of Brisbane. The suburb forms part of the broader Caboolture corridor, which includes Narangba, Morayfield, and Caboolture itself, all sharing a strong community sporting culture. The Moreton Bay Lions represent this entire corridor rather than any single suburb, making them a genuinely regional club.
The Lions compete in the QFA and call the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex, Burpengary home. Visit the club website for more information, follow them on Facebook, and follow them on Instagram for news and match day updates.
Footy Banner Information
All Footy Banners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using solvent inks which will not run, even if they get wet.
We recommend taping broomsticks to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it. if you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through.
On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon!
Return and Refund Policy
As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.
Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
