About Cardiff Australian Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Cardiff Australian Football Club, nicknamed the Hawks, was established on 14 November 1967 at a meeting at the Evans Oval Soccer Hall, founded by former pupils of Cardiff High School. The club first played football in 1968, entering a team in the Newcastle Australian Football League Reserve grade competition. In their debut season they finished as runners-up in the Grand Final, losing by just one point, before winning the Reserve grade premiership in 1969. Cardiff was subsequently elevated to First Grade competition, with the club's first-ever First Grade game played on the ground now known as McDonald Jones Stadium.
Club History
Cardiff made their First Grade Grand Final debut in 1974 (losing to RAAF) and moved to Maneela Park in Glendale in 1978. Under the coaching of former Glenelg footballer Neil Davis, Cardiff won their first NAFL First Grade premiership in 1979 and completed an undefeated 1980 season to take back-to-back flags. After a drought stretching 18 years, the Hawks won again in 1998 - another undefeated season. Following the merger of the Newcastle and Central Coast leagues to form the Black Diamond Australian Football League in 2000, Cardiff were strong early performers, winning four consecutive flags: 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. The club has won a total of eight First Grade premierships. Cardiff has also produced one AFL player: Isaac Heeney, drafted by the Sydney Swans in the 2014 AFL National Draft.
Home Ground
The Hawks play their home games at Pasterfield Sports Complex on Horizon Avenue in Cameron Park. The club relocated to this ground following the redevelopment of their previous home at Maneela Park. Pasterfield Sports Complex is a modern community sporting facility in the City of Lake Macquarie.
Community and Programs
Cardiff Hawks fields senior men's Cup and Plate teams alongside senior women's Cup and Plate teams, plus a junior program. The club's motto is "The Family Club," reflecting its community-first culture. The Hawks operate under the AFL Hunter Central Coast competition and draw players from Cardiff, Cameron Park, Glendale, and the broader Lake Macquarie catchment.
Cameron Park
Cameron Park is a suburb within the City of Lake Macquarie, part of the Greater Newcastle area of New South Wales, located approximately 16 kilometres west of Newcastle's CBD. The suburb recorded a population of 9,977 at the 2021 Census. Cameron Park is situated near West Wallsend and the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway, providing good access to both the Hunter Valley and Newcastle city.

Footy Banner Information
Material: All Milestone Banners made by Footybanners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using permanent inks which will not run, even if they get wet. They are fully recyclable.
How to Use: We recommend taping broomsticks or plastic pipe to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it. If you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through. There are instructions and images for how to cut these in the FAQ section below.
On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon! This is why we do not pre-cut them, and also so you can get photographs with your intact banner when it looks at it's best.
Tip: Some players choose to only cut one weak spot in their banner so it can be saved and displayed later by taping it back together on the back.Pro Tip: Cut the weak spot to one side of the mascot or team logo so it stays intact as well!
