About Coolum Beach Breakers AFL
Origins and Founding
Coolum Beach Breakers Australian Football Club was established in 2005 by an enthusiastic group of parents and community members who wanted to bring junior AFL to the Coolum Beach area. The club's inaugural President, David Ward, guided the Breakers from their earliest days out of a small facility at Coolum State High School. Two decades on, the Breakers have grown into the fastest-growing junior AFL club on the Sunshine Coast, with nearly 200 registered members and a strong premiership record across multiple age groups and competitions.
Club History
The Coolum Beach Breakers have built an impressive list of competition honours since their founding. The club has claimed premierships in 2012 (AFL Sunshine Coast Under 12 Division 1), 2014 (AFL Sunshine Coast Under 16 Division 2), 2016 (AFL Sunshine Coast Under 17 Girls), 2019 (AFL SEQ Under 14 and AFL SEQ Under 16), and 2021 (AFL SEQ Sunshine Coast Under 12.5 Division 3). The Breakers have been a consistent finals presence across AFL South East Queensland competitions and have received formal recognition as a Club of the Year for their community contribution. The club has long-term ambitions to add senior football to its offering, reflecting the growth of Australian Rules in the Coolum region.
Home Ground
The Breakers play their home games from the grounds at Coolum State High School, Coolum Beach, Queensland. The school oval provides the club's main training and competition venue, and the club has been working toward improving facilities and the match-day experience for players and supporters. The Coolum Beach location gives the club a distinctive identity as part of one of the Sunshine Coast's most popular coastal communities.
Community and Programs
The Breakers describe themselves as a community and family-oriented club, and that culture has been central to their growth. Programs span from Auskick-age children through to youth competition teams for boys and girls, reflecting the club's commitment to ensuring all young people in the Coolum area have access to Australian Rules Football. The club has invested in girls' and women's football since 2016, when they claimed their first Under 17 Girls premiership, and they continue to run girls' teams as a significant part of their program. Nearly 200 members make the Breakers one of the larger junior clubs in the AFL South East Queensland region.
Coolum Beach
Coolum Beach is a coastal suburb on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, located approximately 25 kilometres north of Maroochydore and around 100 kilometres north of Brisbane. The suburb sits on the eastern shores of the Sunshine Coast and is known for its surf beach, Mount Coolum National Park, and laid-back coastal lifestyle. Coolum Beach has experienced significant population growth as part of the broader Sunshine Coast expansion, making it an increasingly important residential and tourism hub on Queensland's south-east coast.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
