About Kilcunda Bass
Origins and Founding
The Kilcunda Bass Football Netball Club was formed in 1957 when the Kilcunda Football Club and the Bass Football Club merged, joining the newly stable Bass Valley-Wonthaggi District Football League for the 1957 season. The Bass Football Club had itself played out of the Bass Recreation Reserve since at least 1910, the same ground the merged club still uses today. Long-serving player Les Hender told the Sentinel-Times in 2024 that the newly combined side won the senior flag in its very first season, continuing a family story that would eventually span three generations of premiership players.

Club History
Nicknamed the Panthers, Kilcunda Bass spent almost four decades in the Bass Valley-Wonthaggi District Football League, adding senior premierships in 1960 and 1980, before the competition was disbanded in 1995 and the club moved first to the West Gippsland Football League and later to the Alberton Football Netball League. The Alberton years brought the club's most dominant stretch, with three consecutive senior premierships from 2011 to 2013. Brad Hender, whose father and grandfather had each won flags with the club, played in the 2011 premiership, a three-generation story told in detail by the Sentinel-Times in 2024. In 2017 Kilcunda Bass became a founding member of the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition, where the club reached the 2024 finals series as sixth seed before losing its semi-final to eventual runner-up Nar Nar Goon. Panthers player Dale Gawley won the competition's senior best-and-fairest award in 2023, adding to earlier League Best and Fairest honours won by Peter Mabilia, Brett Anthony and two-time recipient Chris Endres.

Home Ground
The club has played out of the Bass Recreation Reserve on Hade Avenue since the 1957 merger, the same site the original Bass Football Club had used since at least 1910. The ground continues to double as a West Gippsland Football Netball Competition finals venue, hosting semi-final and elimination final fixtures in 2019, 2022 and 2024. It remains home to every grade the club fields, from Auskick through to seniors and netball.

Community and Programs
Kilcunda Bass fields football teams from Auskick through Under 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s to Seniors, Reserves and an Over-35s veterans side, alongside netball teams from 11-and-Under through to A Grade. That broad age range across both codes keeps the Bass Recreation Reserve busy for most of the season and gives the small local community a genuinely multi-generational sporting home.

Bass, Victoria
Bass is a small town in the Bass Coast Shire in Gippsland, recorded at 405 residents in the 2021 census. It sits 113 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, roughly midway between Wonthaggi and San Remo, and takes its name from the explorer George Bass. Bass's own Wikipedia entry notes that the town, together with neighbouring Kilcunda, fields the football and netball club that carries both their names.
