About Northwest Lightning
Origins and Founding
The Northwest Lightning was established in 2016 as an alliance between the Pennant Hills and Westbrook junior AFL clubs in Sydney's north-west, with the aim of growing girls Australian rules football in the Hornsby and Hills Shire communities. Hornsby-Berowra junior AFL later joined the alliance as a third partner. The alliance's first team combined to field an Under 14 girls team in 2016, representing players from multiple local clubs who otherwise had no dedicated girls football outlet in the area.

Club History
From its initial Under 14 team, the Northwest Lightning grew rapidly, adding Under 15 and Under 12 teams in 2017. By 2020 the alliance had sufficient players to field teams across all age divisions in the AFL Sydney Harbour competition. In 2025, the Hornsby-Berowra Eagles announced its exit from the alliance, with the Lightning continuing under its founding Pennant Hills and Westbrook clubs. The Lightning won its first premiership in 2023, with the YG12 team claiming the Blue division grand final, and secured a second flag in 2025 when the YG13 team won the Division Three grand final. Players who develop through the Lightning have a clear pathway to senior AFL through the Pennant Hills Demons senior club.

Home Ground
The Northwest Lightning alliance clubs are based in the Pennant Hills and Westbrook areas of Sydney's north-west, using various grounds across the Hornsby Shire for training and matches. Games are played across the AFL Sydney Juniors competition schedule, with the alliance drawing its players from a broad catchment across the northern and north-western suburbs of Sydney.

Community and Programs
The Northwest Lightning's mission is to grow women's and girls Australian rules football in Sydney's north-western suburbs. The alliance runs teams across multiple youth age divisions, providing a development pathway from the early teen years through to the senior women's competition. The Lightning is an all-girls program, and the alliance partner clubs - Pennant Hills Demons and Westbrook Bulldogs - provide the community backbone for the program. School AFL programs also run in the area to introduce new players to the game.

Sydney's North-West
The Hornsby and Hills Shires form part of greater Sydney's north-western corridor, approximately 25 to 45 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD. The Hornsby Shire encompasses suburbs including Pennant Hills, Berowra and Hornsby itself, while the Hills Shire includes areas like Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills and beyond. The region has seen rapid population growth in recent decades, and community sport has played an important role in bringing residents together across this diverse and expanding urban area.
