About Saint Mary's Junior Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
Saint Mary's Football Club was founded in 1944-45 out of a local four-way church competition in Seymour, contested by St. Mary's, the Church of England, the Presbyterian Church and the Methodist Church, according to the club's own history page. St. Mary's parish priest Father Tom Curran served as the club's first president, with former Seymour player Fred Brock appointed coach and Jack Francis named captain. St. Mary's won every premiership played during the church competition era before that competition disbanded in 1949, at which point the club joined the newly formed Hume Highway League, taking on teams from Euroa, Broadford, Tallarook and Yea among other district towns.

Club History
For years the club fed talented juniors into the senior Seymour Football Club. The original St. Mary's Football Club later disbanded and was reformed after an unrecorded gap in years, eventually becoming today's Saint Mary's Junior Football Netball Club (SMJFNC). One of its best-known graduates is David Mundy, who started playing at St. Mary's at the age of eight before being drafted by the Fremantle Dockers in 2003 and going on to play 376 AFL games between 2004 and 2022. Today the club fields football teams from Under 10 to Under 16 and netball teams across the 11 and Under, 13 and Under, and 15 and Under age groups in the Seymour District Junior Football Netball League (SDJFNL), run under AFL Goulburn Murray.

Home Ground
The Saints train and play home matches at Chittick Park in Seymour, sharing the town's football and netball grounds with the SDJFNL competition's Sunday fixtures across every junior age group.

Community and Programs
The club has produced representative honours beyond weekly fixtures, with players selected for the AFL Goulburn Murray Tatura Milk Junior Netball Academy in 2020 and the Murray Bushrangers V/Line Cup in 2019. Saint Mary's also holds an annual presentation night, with the 2019 event held at St. Mary's College Exhibition Hall in Seymour drawing close to 300 attendees to celebrate players and volunteers across the football and netball programs.

Seymour is a town of 6,569 residents at the 2021 census, sitting in Victoria's Shire of Mitchell in the southern Goulburn Valley, according to Wikipedia. Located 104 kilometres north of Melbourne on the Hume Highway, the town services the surrounding agricultural industries and the nearby Puckapunyal Army base, giving the Saints a close-knit local community to draw players and netballers from.
