About Stony Creek Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
Stony Creek Football Netball Club was formed in 1894 in the small South Gippsland township of Stony Creek, Victoria, making it one of the older football clubs recorded in the district according to Wikipedia's history of the Alberton Football Netball League. Known today as the Lions, the club played in local competitions before joining the Alberton Football League in 1969 alongside Meeniyan-Dumbalk United, after the South Gippsland Football League disbanded that year.
 
Club History
The Lions won their first Alberton premiership in 1983, defeating Devon in the grand final, and claimed a second flag in 2009 with a win over Wonthaggi Power. Stony Creek also played off in grand finals in 1979, 1980, 1985 and 2010, and contested the last ever Alberton Football Netball League grand final in 2019, going down to Foster by 7 points at Tarwin Lower Recreation Reserve. Individual honours have followed too: Don McKnight won the league's Peter Moore Medal in 1971, Brad Hutchinson in 2004 and Darcy Atkins in 2019, while Lucas McMillan kicked a century of goals for the club in 2004. Forward Robert Eddy, who came through the Stony Creek and Gippsland Power pathway, went on to play 33 AFL games for St Kilda between 2007 and 2011. After 74 years of competition the Alberton league folded in 2020, and Stony Creek joined the Mid Gippsland Football Netball League in 2021 alongside five other former Alberton clubs.
 
Home Ground
The Lions play home games at the Stony Creek Racecourse and Recreation Reserve, a dual purpose venue shared with the Stony Creek Racing Club, which schedules around seven race meetings a year. In 2025 the club carried out a $90,000 netball court upgrade at the reserve, self-funding $65,000 of the project, as detailed in a post from contractor Linxcrete.
 
Community and Programs
Beyond senior football and netball, the club builds its playing base through junior pathways and ongoing coaching appointments, including a senior netball coaching appointment made ahead of the 2026 season. Annual membership and registration drives bring together players, volunteers and families from Stony Creek and the surrounding farming district, with the clubrooms also hosting social events such as the club's mid-season ball.
 
Stony Creek, Victoria
Stony Creek is a small town in the Shire of South Gippsland, sitting roughly between Meeniyan and Foster and recording a population of just 281 at the 2016 census. Best known locally for its racecourse and go-kart track, the town relies heavily on the football netball club as a focal point of community life, drawing players and support from across the surrounding district.
