About Walgett Rams Rugby Union
Origins and Founding
The Walgett Rams Rugby Union Club was established in 1958, making it one of the longer-running rugby union clubs in far north-western New South Wales. The club competes in the Western Plains Rugby Union, which administers clubs across the Western Plains Zone including Cobar, Bourke, Nyngan, Gular, Coonamble, Brewarrina, Walgett, and Warren. The Rams are affiliated with the New South Wales Country Rugby Union under the broader NSW rugby structure.

Club History
The Walgett Rams have built a strong record in the Western Plains Zone competition over more than six decades. In September 2020, the Rams claimed the Western Plains Rugby Union premiership in both first and second grade, demonstrating the depth and quality the club has developed across its playing ranks. In 2025, the Rams advanced to the Western Plains finals, facing Nyngan Bogan Bulls in a semi-final at Algy Friend Oval. The club's women's side, the Ewes, also competes in zone finals, with the women reaching the Minor Semi-Finals against Nyngan in 2025. The Rams have historically been a central part of the bush rugby culture of the Western Plains region.

Home Ground
The Walgett Rams play their home games at Algy Friend Oval in Walgett, New South Wales. The ground underwent a community-driven rehabilitation in 2019, transforming it from a desolate landscape into a functional playing surface through the efforts of club members and community supporters working together. The ground serves as the centre of rugby activity for both the senior men's and women's programs based in Walgett.

Community and Programs
The Walgett Rams field both a senior men's side and a women's team (the Ewes) in Western Plains Rugby Union competition. In 2026, the club participated in the "She's Got Game Western Plains" initiative, a program aimed at growing women's rugby in the region. The club draws on the strong sporting culture of the Walgett community, where both rugby union and rugby league have deep roots. Woodham Petroleum Services serves as the Rams' major sponsor, supporting the club's operations across both men's and women's grades.

Walgett
Walgett is a town in northern New South Wales, situated 691 km north-west of Sydney at the junction of the Barwon and Namoi Rivers. According to the 2021 census, Walgett had a population of 1,377. The area has deep cultural significance for the Gamilaroi and Yuwaaliyaay nations. The town's name derives from an Aboriginal word meaning "the meeting place of two rivers." Walgett is a regional hub for wool, wheat, and cotton production, and serves as the gateway to the Lightning Ridge opal fields.
