About West Wallsend Football Club
Origins and Founding
West Wallsend Football Club was founded in 1891 by Scottish miners as West Wallsend Athletic FC, making it the third oldest surviving club in the Northern Federation behind Wallsend (1887) and Adamstown Rosebud (1889). The club did not compete during the 1895 and 1896 seasons due to a miners' strike in the district, before re-forming at the end of 1896 as the West Wallsend Bluebells FC.
Club History
The Bluebells built an early reputation well beyond the district, being selected in 1902 to represent Newcastle against Sydney and winning 4-2, then defeating a touring Canadian representative side 3-0 in 1923. The club has won 13 Northern NSW premierships, from 1899 through to 1986, and produced 21 full internationals across its history, according to the club's official honour roll. The Federation dropped the Bluebells from the top division at the end of 1996 due to a lack of facilities, and the club nearly disbanded in 2014 after struggling to field a side, before rebuilding to reach a grand final in 2018 and finish third of ten teams in Northern League One in 2025.
Home Ground
The Bluebells have played at Johnston Park, on the corner of Laidley Street and Wilson Street in West Wallsend, since the club's early years, on land originally leased from the Caledonian Coal Company. The ground earned the nickname 'Wembley' in the 1920s, when the West Wallsend side featured eight full internationals.
Community and Programs
West Wallsend runs Junior Development League and Pathway Youth League programs alongside its senior side, giving young Bluebells a structured pathway from junior football through to Under 18s and beyond in one of Newcastle's oldest clubs.
West Wallsend
West Wallsend is a suburb of about 2,981 people (2021 census) in the City of Lake Macquarie, around 21 kilometres west of Newcastle. Its origins lie in coal mining, with the West Wallsend Coal Company formed in 1885 to work the rich Borehole seam that gave rise to the township.
