About Aberfeldie Sports Club
Origins and Founding
Aberfeldie Sports Club traces its roots to the Aberfeldie Community Centre, which was established in 1944 and became the foundation of organised sport in the suburb. The first football team to represent the club - an Under 17s side - entered the Essendon District Football League (EDFL) in 1948, winning the club's first premiership in 1951. The club was formally constituted as Aberfeldie Sports Club in 1974 and became wholly incorporated in 1981. Originally known as "The Gorillas", the club later adopted the popular nickname "Abers", which remains in widespread use today.
Club History
Aberfeldie has built a remarkable premiership record across more than seven decades. The senior men's team won the A-Grade flag in 1974, then went on to claim back-to-back Premier Division titles in 2017 and 2018 - the first time in the club's history - following a breakthrough senior premiership in 2015 that ended a 41-year drought. As recorded on Wikipedia, the Under 18 program set an EDFL record by winning five consecutive premierships from 2000 to 2004, adding further titles in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018. The Women's Premier Division flag arrived in 2019, with the program continuing to grow in strength. Six players from the club's 2025 pathway program earned opportunities with the Calder Cannons, underscoring Aberfeldie's standing as a genuine talent producer in Melbourne's north-west.
Home Ground
Aberfeldie Sports Club plays its home games at Clifton Park, located at 7C Batman Street, Aberfeldie. The ground has long been the centre of community sport in the suburb. The Clifton Park Pavilion Redevelopment has since been completed, delivering a modern, state-of-the-art facility that serves football, cricket, and netball programs year-round.
Community and Programs
Aberfeldie runs one of the largest junior participation programs in the EDFL, fielding 24 junior football teams from Under 8s to Under 16s, including eight youth girls' sides. Senior men's sides compete across the Premier Division, Reserves, Under 19s, and Thirds. The women's football program fields two EDFL teams - one in the Premier Division and one in Division One. The club also runs a thriving cricket program (founded in 1928) and a netball section, making Aberfeldie a true multi-sport community hub.
Aberfeldie
Aberfeldie is an inner suburb of Melbourne, located 8 km north-west of the CBD within the City of Moonee Valley. The suburb recorded a population of 3,925 at the 2021 census and is bounded by the Maribyrnong River to the south and Aberfeldie Park to the east. The suburb takes its name from a Scottish property named after the town of Aberfeldy, sold in 1888. It is a predominantly residential area with strong community ties, and Clifton Park serves as its sporting heartland.
The Abers compete in the EDFL and call Clifton Park home. Visit the club website for more information, follow them on Facebook, and follow them on Instagram for news and match day updates.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
