About Geelong Amateur Football and Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Geelong Amateur Football and Netball Club (GAFNC) was established in 1926, making it one of the centenary clubs of the Geelong sporting landscape. The club was formed by teachers and students from two of Victoria's most prestigious private schools - Geelong College and Geelong Grammar School - who came together to field a football team in the local competition. This origins story gives the Ammos (as the club is nicknamed) a distinctive character among Geelong clubs, with deep ties to the city's educational institutions from the very beginning.
Club History
Since 1926, the Geelong Amateur Football and Netball Club has competed in the Geelong and District Football Netball League (GDFNL), the oldest surviving football competition in Victoria and one of the oldest in Australia. The GDFNL traces its origins back to the nineteenth century and has been the backdrop for the Ammos' entire history. The club has built a loyal membership and a proud tradition of community participation, competing at senior and junior levels across both football and netball throughout its century of existence. 2026 marks the club's centenary - a remarkable milestone for any community sporting club.
Home Ground
The Ammos are based in Geelong, competing across the GDFNL's network of grounds throughout the season. The club's school connections mean it has long benefited from access to the sporting facilities associated with the Geelong educational precinct, as well as the established community ovals used by GDFNL clubs across greater Geelong. The club's home ground arrangements reflect the amateur, community-first philosophy that has defined the Ammos since their founding.
Community and Programs
The Geelong Amateur Football and Netball Club offers both football and netball, giving families in the Geelong area a dual sporting option under one club banner. Junior football, senior men's and women's teams, and netball across multiple grades provide pathways for participants of all ages. The club's amateur roots and school-affiliated origins have always lent it a collegial, inclusive culture that distinguishes it from purely suburb-based clubs in the region.
Geelong
Geelong is Victoria's second-largest city, located approximately 75 kilometres south-west of Melbourne on the shores of Corio Bay. Known for the Geelong Football Club (the AFL Cats), the city has a proud and deep football culture at all levels of the game. The GDFNL, in which the Ammos compete, is one of Australia's oldest surviving competitions and has produced generations of community footballers throughout the greater Geelong region. The city's mix of longstanding industrial heritage, growing residential development, and strong educational institutions makes it one of Victoria's most dynamic regional cities.
The Ammos compete in the Geelong and District Football Netball League (GDFNL) and are based in Geelong. Follow the Geelong Amateur Football and Netball Club on social media for the latest news and fixtures from this historic club.
Footy Banner Information
Material: All Footy Banners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using permanent inks which will not run, even if they get wet. They are fully recyclable.
How to Use: We recommend taping broomsticks or plastic pipe to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it. If you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through. There are instructions and images for how to cut these in the FAQ section below.
On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon! This is why we do not pre-cut them, and also so you can get photographs with your intact banner when it looks at it's best.
Tip: Some players choose to only cut one weak spot in their banner so it can be saved and displayed later by taping it back together on the back.Pro Tip: Cut the weak spot to one side of the mascot or team logo so it stays intact as well!
Return and Refund Policy
As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.
Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
