About Kilsyth Football Club

Origins and Founding

The Kilsyth Football Club, nicknamed the Cougars, has a history stretching back to 1910 when the first Kilsyth Football Club was formed in the outer eastern Melbourne suburb of Kilsyth. After various mergers and reformations through the early 20th century, the present-day club was formally established as a sole entity in 1924, when it purchased a former orchard on Colchester Road to serve as its home ground. The club competed in the Ringwood District Football League from 1927 and was a founding member of the Eastern District Football League when that competition formed, playing in it continuously until 1981. The club went through several nickname phases including the "Sythers" and "Red Robins" before settling on the Cougars, a nickname reflecting the club's location at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges.

Club History

Kilsyth's most notable period came when the club joined the Victorian Football Association (VFA) in 1982, becoming one of the few suburban clubs to compete at that semi-professional level. Despite finishing last in the EDFL's second division in 1981, the Cougars secured VFA Division 2 entry as part of the association's expansion into Melbourne's outer north-eastern suburbs. Their three seasons in the VFA produced a record of 9 wins and 44 losses across 1982, 1983, and 1984 before the club returned to the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL). Kilsyth's seven EFNL premierships came in 1938, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1975, 1990, and 1995. In 1997, the club relocated from its historic Colchester Road ground to Pinks Reserve in Liverpool Road, Kilsyth, where it continues to play today.

Home Ground

Kilsyth FC has played at Pinks Reserve in Liverpool Road, Kilsyth, since 1997. The ground replaced the club's original Colchester Road venue (now known as Kilsyth Recreation Reserve) that had served as the club's home since 1924. Pinks Reserve is a well-established community sporting ground in the Kilsyth area, providing facilities for senior football, reserves, and junior programs. The Kilsyth Recreation Reserve at Colchester Road, where the club had its origins, remains a sporting facility in the suburb and is a reminder of the club's deep roots in the local landscape.

Community and Programs

Kilsyth FC fields senior men's and women's teams in the EFNL across Division 4 and the women's Division 2 competition. The club also fields a team in the Victorian FIDA Football League. A comprehensive junior program ensures that players from Kilsyth and surrounding suburbs have a clear pathway from junior football into the senior ranks, maintaining the club's connection to its local community across multiple generations. The Cougars' commitment to inclusive football and community development has been a constant throughout the club's century of operation, from its origins as a local amateur club through to its current form as a multi-grade community football organisation.

Kilsyth

Kilsyth is a suburb in the Yarra Ranges Shire in Melbourne's outer eastern fringe, situated approximately 35 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD. The suburb sits at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges, with the Kilsyth area providing a gateway to the ranges region that extends eastward toward Lilydale, Healesville, and the Yarra Valley wine country. Kilsyth developed as a residential suburb during Melbourne's post-World War II expansion, with market gardens and orchards giving way to residential housing through the 1950s and 1960s. The broader Yarra Ranges Shire is known for its natural beauty, wineries, and outdoor recreational opportunities, creating a distinctive setting for football in Melbourne's outermost eastern suburbs.

  • Footy Banner Information

Material:  All Footy Banners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using permanent inks which will not run, even if they get wet.  They are fully recyclable.

How to Use:  We recommend taping broomsticks or plastic pipe to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it.  If you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through.  There are instructions and images for how to cut these in the FAQ section below.

On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon!  This is why we do not pre-cut them, and also so you can get photographs with your intact banner when it looks at it's best.

Tip: Some players choose to only cut one weak spot in their banner so it can be saved and displayed later by taping it back together on the back.

Pro Tip:  Cut the weak spot to one side of the mascot or team logo so it stays intact as well!
