About Ascot Vale Panthers Junior Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Ascot Vale Panthers trace their history to 1898, making them one of the oldest Australian rules football clubs in Melbourne's inner north-west. Established under the name "Two Blues," the club became a founding member of the Essendon District Football League (EDFL) in 1930. The club competed as a senior powerhouse through the twentieth century, winning multiple A Grade premierships and accumulating one of the best premiership records in EDFL history before the senior program was disbanded in 1997.
Club History
The Ascot Vale Panthers were revived in 2017 with a renewed focus as a 100% junior-dedicated football club. Starting with a single team in 2017, the Panthers have grown rapidly into one of the largest junior AFL programs in the Essendon District, offering pathways for players from AFL Auskick through to under-19s. The club has produced players who have progressed to VFL and AFLW level, reflecting the quality of its junior development pathways. The women's and girls' program has grown particularly strongly, with multiple teams competing across all junior age groups through the EDFL.
Home Ground
The Panthers play their home games at Walter Street Reserve in Ascot Vale and also use Merv Hughes Oval in Edgewater. Walter Street Reserve is a well-maintained community ground in the heart of Ascot Vale, providing a familiar and accessible venue for local families. The use of multiple grounds reflects the club's expanding program and its growing number of teams across age groups and genders.
Community and Programs
The Panthers run one of the most comprehensive junior programs in the EDFL, catering for boys and girls across every age group from under-8s to under-19s. AFL Auskick is available for children aged 4 to 10, providing the entry point into Australian rules football. The club also fields a Men's Masters competition for players 35 and over. The Panthers are committed to being a family-first environment, welcoming players new to football as well as developing experienced juniors to reach their potential.

-
-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
