About Deer Park Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Deer Park Football Club, nicknamed the Lions, was founded in 1925 and spent its early years competing in competitions centred on the Werribee district. In 1935 the club entered what was then known as the FDFL (later the Western Region Football League) and underwent a name change during this period, operating for a time under the name ICI after the large chemical manufacturing firm that operated in the Deer Park industrial area. Following the disruption of World War II, the club reformed and re-established itself in the western suburbs of Melbourne as Deer Park Football Club.
Club History
The Lions secured their first senior premierships in 1939, 1940, and 1941 during the WRFL's early years, establishing the club as a credible western suburbs force. After a decades-long drought, the flags returned in 1994 and then in emphatic fashion during the 2010s. Deer Park won 11 WRFL Division One premierships in total, with an extraordinary seven consecutive flags from 2013 through to 2019 - a record unmatched by any other metropolitan club in Victoria. The club also claimed WRFL Division Two titles in 2009 and 2011 during its rebuilding phase. In 2023 the Lions relocated to the Essendon District Football League (EDFL), where they won Division One in their debut season in 2023, demonstrating the club's enduring strength at the top level of community football.
Home Ground
The Lions play at Deer Park Sports Oval in Deer Park. The ground has served as the club's home base through the club's most successful era, hosting the seven-premiership dynasty of 2013-2019 and the subsequent transition to the EDFL competition. The facility is shared with other local sporting clubs in the area.
Community and Programs
Deer Park FC runs junior football programs that feed directly into the senior pathway, and the club's sustained success at the top level of community football has made it a source of pride across the broader Deer Park and Brimbank community. With 12 WRFL/EDFL premierships to its name, the Lions represent one of the most decorated community football clubs in Melbourne's west, and the club continues to attract and develop local talent from the surrounding suburbs.
Deer Park
Deer Park is a suburb of Melbourne's west, located approximately 19 kilometres from the CBD in the City of Brimbank local government area. At the 2021 Census, Deer Park recorded a population of 18,145 residents. The suburb is historically linked to industrial activity - most notably the ICI chemical plant that operated for decades from the mid-twentieth century - and has since become a residential and light-industrial area within the growing western suburbs corridor.
The Lions compete in the EDFL and call Deer Park Sports Oval home. Find out more at deerparkfc.com.au, follow the club on Facebook, or connect on Instagram at @deerparkfc.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
