About Drouin Football and Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Drouin Football and Netball Club, nicknamed the Hawks, was founded in 1890, making it one of the oldest clubs in regional Victoria. Based in the Gippsland township of Drouin, the club has been a central institution of the local community for over 130 years. In its early decades, Drouin competed in various local district competitions as the town developed as a farming and dairy community in the West Gippsland corridor south-east of Melbourne.
Club History
The Drouin Hawks compete in the Gippsland League and have won eight premierships: in 1941, 1946, 1949, 1958, 1967, 1978, 1991, and 1992. Their back-to-back flags in 1991 and 1992 represented the club's most recent sustained period of success. The club has produced several players who went on to reach VFL and AFL level, including Gary Ablett Sr., who played for Hawthorn and then Geelong before becoming one of the greatest players in AFL history, as well as Luke Ablett (Sydney Swans), Dale Thomas (Collingwood, Carlton), and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (Essendon). The club also experienced some very difficult seasons in the 2010s, including winless campaigns in 2014 and 2017, but has continued to field senior, reserve, under-18, and under-16 football teams.
Home Ground
The Hawks play at Drouin Recreation Reserve, which has served as the club's home ground for many generations. The ground is located in the heart of Drouin and provides facilities for both the football and netball programs. The club fields multiple netball grades including A, B and C Grade and junior netball teams, making the reserve a busy venue for community sport throughout the year.
Community and Programs
The Drouin Hawks run both football and netball programs under one club umbrella, with the netball section fielding teams across A, B and C Grade and under-17, under-15 and under-13 age groups. With more than 4,100 followers on their Facebook page, the Hawks enjoy strong community support from the Drouin area and across the broader West Gippsland region. The club is a significant community organisation in a town that takes great pride in its local football traditions.
Drouin
Drouin is a town in the West Gippsland region of Victoria, located approximately 90 kilometres south-east of Melbourne via the Princes Freeway. As the administrative centre of the Baw Baw Shire, Drouin recorded a population of approximately 14,000 residents at the 2021 census. The town is set in a fertile dairy farming region at the foot of the Great Dividing Range, and has grown steadily in recent decades as it has attracted residential development from Melbourne's outer-eastern fringe. Drouin is also known as an entry point to the Strzelecki Ranges and the broader Gippsland Lakes region.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
