About Geelong West Giants Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Geelong West Giants were formed on 23 November 2016 through the merger of two of North Geelong's oldest football clubs - the Geelong West St Peters Football Club (known as "Red West" or the Roosters, with roots tracing to 1878) and the Geelong West Sporting Club (known as "Blue West" or the Cheetahs, established in 1926). At the time of the merger, both clubs were experiencing on-field challenges, and the combination of their memberships, histories, and resources created a stronger, more unified entity. Members of both clubs voted overwhelmingly in favour of the merger in mid-2016, with the Giants name chosen in part to align with a potential partnership with AFL club Greater Western Sydney Giants.

Club History
While the Giants as a merged club were founded in 2016, their combined history stretches back to 1878 through the Red West lineage - making the Giants one of the clubs with the deepest football roots in the Geelong region. The club fields teams in both the Geelong Football Netball League (GFNL) and the Geelong and District Football Netball League (GDFNL), offering competition pathways at senior, reserves, and junior levels. The Giants also field women's teams in the AFL Barwon Female Football competition, rounding out a comprehensive program for the North Geelong community.

Home Ground
The Giants play their home games across two grounds - West Oval and Bakers Oval - both located in the North Geelong area. The use of two grounds reflects the club's dual league structure, with GFNL teams playing in the main Geelong competition and GDFNL teams competing in the district league. The grounds have been home to football in this part of Geelong for many decades, carrying the heritage of both predecessor clubs.

Community and Programs
The Geelong West Giants offer football and netball for all ages and genders, making them a true multi-sport community club. From junior teams and Auskick programs through to senior men's and women's football and netball, the Giants provide participation opportunities throughout the year. The club's strong volunteer base and family-friendly culture reflect the community spirit that drove the 2016 merger - the belief that a united club could better serve North Geelong than two separate struggling ones.

North Geelong
North Geelong is a suburb of the City of Greater Geelong, located approximately two kilometres north of Geelong's CBD along Corio Bay. One of Geelong's older suburbs, it has a working-class history tied to the port, industrial works, and the neighbouring Geelong refinery area. The suburb is known for its community spirit and strong sporting culture, with the Giants being one of its most prominent local institutions. Geelong itself sits approximately 75 kilometres south-west of Melbourne, making it Victoria's second largest city and one of Australia's fastest-growing regional centres.
