About Glebe Greyhounds Junior AFL Club
Origins and Founding
The Glebe Greyhounds Junior Australian Football Club was founded in 1980 by Simon Kelly and John Muggeridge, both 18 years old at the time. The pair saw a need to provide an alternative sport to local youth in Sydney's inner west, and the need of Balmain AFL to have an affiliated junior club gave the project momentum. The club's name was inspired by its early training location next to the greyhound racing facility at Wentworth Park in Glebe. It nearly became the Annandale JAFC, but when the founders went to register, they discovered Annandale had an outstanding debt to the NSW junior football body - and the Glebe Greyhounds were born instead. The club's jumpers were donated by John Coles, then Balmain AFL president, who had around 40 Annandale Magpies jumpers in storage. The club's song was adopted from the Collingwood theme because the line "Side by side we stick together" aligned with the founders' values.

Club History
Australian rules football has been played in the Glebe area since the 1880s, when Wentworth Park served as the main oval for the sport in Sydney and a senior club called West Sydney drew its players from the inner west. In 1903, following Federation, 11 new clubs were formed across Sydney, playing matches at venues including Wentworth Park, Birchgrove Oval, and the Sydney Cricket Ground. The modern Glebe Greyhounds JAFC has built on this long tradition, growing from a small founding group in 1980 into one of Sydney's established junior AFL clubs. In 1934, seven former Glebe Juniors players had represented Sydney, and the lineage of football in the area continued through various clubs until the current club was established. The Greyhounds have produced many junior players who have gone on to play senior AFL in Sydney, reflecting the strong football culture in Sydney's inner west.

Home Ground
The Glebe Greyhounds train and play at Wentworth Park in Glebe, one of the most historically significant sporting precincts in Sydney. Wentworth Park is a multi-purpose venue in the inner western suburb of Glebe, best known also for greyhound racing - giving the club its distinctive name. The location in the heart of the inner west puts the club within easy reach of its membership base across Glebe, Balmain, Annandale, and surrounding suburbs.

Community and Programs
The Glebe Greyhounds JAFC fields junior teams across multiple age groups in the AFL Sydney competition, and is affiliated with Balmain AFL at the senior level. The club is a community-focused organisation run by volunteers, with a strong ethos around inclusion, participation, and the development of Australian rules football in one of Sydney's oldest football communities. The club continues to recruit players from Glebe and surrounding inner-west suburbs, introducing the game to new generations in an area with a football history stretching back over 140 years.

Glebe is an inner suburb of Sydney, located approximately 3 kilometres southwest of the Sydney CBD in the Inner West Council area. With a population of 11,680 at the 2021 census, it is a densely settled suburb characterised by its heritage terraced housing, tree-lined streets, and proximity to the University of Sydney. Glebe's diverse and community-minded character has long supported a vibrant sporting culture, including the deep roots of Australian rules football that stretch back to the 1880s.
