About Hurstbridge Football Netball Club

Origins and Founding

The Hurstbridge Football Club - known as the Bridges - was formally founded in 1914, although social football had been played in the township at Lew Curtis's Flat from as early as the 1890s. The club began its competitive life in the Bourke-Evelyn Football League and played a single season in the Heidelberg District Football Association in 1921 before returning to the Bourke-Evelyn, later known as the Panton Hill Football League (PHFL). Hurstbridge remained in the PHFL for the bulk of the 20th century, accumulating seven senior premierships (1935, 1948, 1952, 1962, 1965, 1968, and 1970) before the league folded at the end of the 1987 season.

Club History

Following the PHFL's closure in 1987, Hurstbridge joined the Diamond Valley Football League, later known as the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL). The Bridges won the NFNL Division 2 premiership in 2003, earning a brief stint in Division 1 in 2004 before being relegated. The club earned its way back with the 2010 Division 3 premiership - contested in the inaugural Division 3 Grand Final - and was promoted to Division 2 in 2011. A second Division 2 premiership followed in 2016. The club's women's program also won the 2022 NFNL Women's Division 3 premiership, marking a milestone in the Bridges' growing commitment to women's football.

Home Ground

The Bridges play their home games at Ben Frilay Oval in Hurstbridge, a ground set within the township's open semi-rural landscape. The ground has been a central part of football life in the outer north-east for many years and serves as the home for both football and netball programs. The club also fields a strong junior program, with Under 17s, Under 15s, and Under 13s sides having all won NFNL premierships at various grade levels.

Community and Programs

Hurstbridge FNC is one of the most geographically isolated NFNL clubs, situated in the Yarra Valley and Kinglake ranges corridor. This isolation has shaped a particularly tight-knit club culture, with the community rallying strongly around the Bridges throughout the season. The club fields senior men's, senior women's, reserves, and junior teams, as well as a netball program competing across the NFNL Netball competition.

Hurstbridge

Hurstbridge is a township in Victoria's Shire of Nillumbik, located approximately 34 kilometres north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District. The township sits at the northern terminus of the Hurstbridge railway line, making it one of the more remote suburban/semi-rural communities served by Melbourne's train network. Hurstbridge and the surrounding Nillumbik green wedge are known for their natural landscapes, bushland trails, and strong community identity.

The Bridges compete in the Northern Football Netball League and call Ben Frilay Oval in Hurstbridge home. Visit the club website for more information and follow them on Facebook for news and match day updates.

  • Footy Banner Information

Material:  All Footy Banners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using permanent inks which will not run, even if they get wet.  They are fully recyclable.

How to Use:  We recommend taping broomsticks or plastic pipe to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it.  If you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through.  There are instructions and images for how to cut these in the FAQ section below.

On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon!  This is why we do not pre-cut them, and also so you can get photographs with your intact banner when it looks at it's best.

Tip: Some players choose to only cut one weak spot in their banner so it can be saved and displayed later by taping it back together on the back.

Pro Tip:  Cut the weak spot to one side of the mascot or team logo so it stays intact as well!

  • Return and Refund Policy

As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
