About Lake Wendouree Lakers

Origins and Founding
The Lake Wendouree Football Netball Club, known as the Lakers, was formed in 1994 from the merger of the Wendouree Football Club and the Ballarat YCW Football Club. Both clubs brought deep histories to the merger: Ballarat YCW competed in senior football between 1946 and 1949 before focusing on juniors, while the Wendouree FC was reformed in 1946, competed in district competitions around Ballarat, and was a founding member of the Central Highlands Football League in 1979. Wendouree had won senior premierships in 1947, 1949, 1963, 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1983 before the merger. The new Lake Wendouree entity entered the Ballarat Football League (BFL) for the first time in 1995.

Club History
Lake Wendouree was competitive from the outset, finishing runner-up in their second BFL season and playing finals every year for the first six seasons. The club's breakthrough senior BFL premiership came in 2010. The Lakers have produced a number of AFL players, including Jordan Roughead (Western Bulldogs and Collingwood), Dan Butler (Richmond and St Kilda), Kai Lohmann (Brisbane Lions), James McDonald (Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney), and Des Tuddenham (Collingwood and Essendon). The club has also consistently performed in junior age-group competitions across the BFL.

Home Ground
The Lakers play at C.E. Brown Reserve in Ballarat North, their home ground since the club's formation in 1994. The reserve is located in the Ballarat North suburb, adjacent to the iconic Lake Wendouree that gives the club its name. The lake is a central feature of Ballarat's landscape and hosted the rowing events at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.

Community and Programs
The Lakers field football and netball sides across multiple grades, fulfilling the vision of the 1994 merger to create a single strong community club for Ballarat North. The club runs junior programs across all age groups, and Lake Wendouree Junior Football Club has developed significant talent over the years. The club's women's program has also expanded alongside the growth of women's football across the BFL.

Ballarat North
Ballarat is Victoria's third-largest city, located approximately 110 kilometres north-west of Melbourne along the Western Freeway - roughly a 90-minute drive. Ballarat North is a residential suburb on the northern shore of Lake Wendouree, home to heritage-listed architecture, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, and a strong community sporting culture. Ballarat is known for its gold rush history, Sovereign Hill, and as a hub of regional Victoria.
