About Macleod Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Macleod Football Netball Club - known as the Eagles - was founded in 1946 through the initiative of Harold Busbridge, the station master at Macleod railway station. Busbridge approached local identities about forming a football club, and interest gathered rapidly. The club's first captain, Nick George, proposed the team's blue and white playing colours. Home games were played at De Winton Park in Rosanna because the Macleod Cricket Club's ground at the time lacked a fence. The club attracted young men from both Rosanna and Greensborough and fielded a senior team (but no reserves) for its first competitive season in 1947.
Club History
Through the 1950s and into the 1960s, the club experienced both growth and internal debate, including a brief period under the combined name "Macleod-Rosanna" in 1962 following a compromise between committee members. The Eagles' first Division 1 senior premiership came in 1971. After a long period in Division 2, the club won the 2009 Division 2 premiership to earn promotion back into the top grade, as noted in the club's Wikipedia history. The club's finest recent chapter came in 2015, when Macleod won the Northern Football Netball League Division 1 premiership under head coach Garry Ramsey - the club's highest honour in over four decades. The Eagles have remained a consistent NFNL Division 1 contender since and are affiliated with a junior club that has produced AFL players including Matthew Collins and Jarrod Molloy.
Home Ground
The Eagles play all home matches at Milestone Chemicals Oval, De Winton Park, located on Lower Plenty Road in Rosanna. De Winton Park has been the club's home ground since its founding in 1946 and hosts both football and netball throughout the season. The ground is named in recognition of the club's generous long-term major sponsor and serves the broader north-eastern Melbourne football community.
Community and Programs
Macleod FNC fields senior men's football, senior women's football, reserves, Under 19s, and junior teams, as well as a netball program across multiple NFNL grades. The affiliated Macleod Junior Football Club puts almost 300 players on the field each week and has been an important talent pipeline for the senior club. The Eagles' community events include notable fundraisers and social functions throughout the year, with the club maintaining strong links to the local Macleod and Rosanna communities.
Macleod and Rosanna
Macleod is a suburb in Melbourne's north-east, located approximately 14 kilometres from the Central Business District across the Cities of Banyule and Darebin, with a population of 9,892 at the 2021 census. The club takes its name from the suburb and its railway station, though it plays at De Winton Park in the neighbouring suburb of Rosanna, which sits 12 kilometres from the CBD within the City of Banyule and recorded a population of 8,616 at the 2021 census. Rosanna is on the fringe of the Yarra Valley green belt, giving the area a distinctive leafy character.
