About Macleod Football Club
Origins and Founding
Macleod Football Club was founded in 1946 when Harold Busbridge, the station master at Macleod railway station, approached local identities with the idea of forming a football club in the area. Interest gathered quickly and a meeting was called to decide on a name and raise funds for jumpers and socks. Nick George, who became Macleod's first captain, supported the effort from the outset. It was decided to play home games at De Winton Park in Rosanna, where the Kangaroos have remained ever since. The club attracted players from Rosanna, Macleod and Greensborough and formed a senior team for its debut season in 1947 in the Diamond Valley Football League.
Club History
Macleod now competes in Division 1 of the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL), one of Victoria's premier suburban leagues. The Kangaroos reached a high point between 1999 and 2002, a period widely regarded as one of the club's most successful eras. In 2015, Macleod claimed a Division 1 premiership - described at the time as the club's second top-flight title - defeating Greensborough in the grand final. In 1997, Macleod Seniors and the Macleod Junior Football Club agreed to wear matching colours of royal blue, white and gold, and to sing the same theme song, formalising a long-standing connection between the two clubs. The club's senior best and fairest is named the Tom Melican Medal, honouring a club stalwart who won the award six times.
Home Ground
De Winton Park in Rosanna has been Macleod's home ground since the club's inception in 1946. The facility has undergone significant improvements over the years, including a major lighting upgrade in 2013 that was made possible through a partnership between the club, local government and state and federal funding. The club contributed $25,000 towards the $220,000 project, with the upgraded lights subsequently used by the Yarra Junior Football League for Under 16 and Under 18 Girls competition.
Community and Programs
Macleod Football and Netball Club fields both senior men's and women's sides in the NFNL, alongside the separately run Macleod Junior Football Club with which it shares a strong community connection. The club has historically served as a development pathway for players from Macleod, Rosanna and surrounding suburbs, and maintains a family-friendly environment that has made it a cornerstone of football in Melbourne's north-east.
Macleod
Macleod is a suburb in Melbourne's north-east, situated within the City of Banyule approximately 15 kilometres from the CBD. It recorded a population of 9,892 at the 2021 census. The suburb takes its name from the Macleod family who were early settlers in the area, and is served by the Macleod railway station on the Hurstbridge Line. Macleod is bordered by Rosanna, Heidelberg, Bundoora and Watsonia, and retains a quiet, leafy character typical of Melbourne's middle-ring northern suburbs.
The Kangaroos compete in the Northern Football Netball League and call De Winton Park, Rosanna home. For more information, visit macleodfc.com.au, or connect on Facebook and Instagram.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
