About Mansfield Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Mansfield Football Netball Club, nicknamed the Eagles, is one of the oldest football clubs in Victoria's north-east, with its origins traced to an advertisement published in the Mansfield Guardian on 18 May 1878, calling for a public meeting at the Mansfield Hotel to form a football club. Formal club records begin from around 1881 to 1883. In the decades following, the club competed in various local district associations against neighbouring clubs including Jamieson, Bonnie Doon, Merton, Maindample, Delatite, Swanpool, Tolmie and Yarck. As smaller clubs declined between the wars, Mansfield and Mount Battery FC eventually amalgamated into the "Mansfield Battery FC", before the club settled under the Mansfield name it carries today.
Club History
The Mansfield Eagles have competed continuously through the region's league landscape since the 19th century, participating in the Mansfield Line Association from 1925 to 1933, the Mansfield-Alexandra FA from 1934 to 1940, the Upper Goulburn FL in 1945 and 1946, the Waranga North East Football Association from 1946 to 1976, the Tungamah Football League from 1977 to 1995, and the Goulburn Valley FL from 1996 onward. In 2004 the Eagles won their first GVFL premiership since joining the league in 1997. Five years later, in 2009, they claimed a second GVFL flag with a grand final victory over Kyabram. The club has produced several players who went on to VFL or AFL level, including Josh Fraser (Collingwood and Gold Coast), Jarrod Kayler-Thomson (Hawthorn), and James Cousins (Hawthorn), as well as Mick Reid, who played 500 senior games for the club.
Home Ground
The Eagles play at Mansfield Recreation Reserve, which has been the club's home for many decades. The reserve is located in the township of Mansfield and provides the facilities for both football and netball competition. The club also operates a netball section in competition within the Goulburn Valley region.
Community and Programs
The Mansfield Football Netball Club caters to the broader Mansfield community across both football and netball programs. The club's deep roots in the region - stretching back almost 150 years - make it one of the defining institutions of community life in the Mansfield Shire. The Facebook community group for the club attracts more than 1,400 members, connecting supporters across the local area and throughout the wider north-east Victorian community.
Mansfield
Mansfield is a rural town in north-east Victoria, situated approximately 180 kilometres north-east of Melbourne in the foothills of the Victorian Alps. The Mansfield Shire had a population of approximately 9,500 residents at the 2021 census. The town is known as the gateway to the Victorian Alps, with Mount Buller ski resort nearby and the broader region popular for outdoor recreation including skiing, mountain biking, bushwalking and horse riding. Mansfield is also well known through its connection to the Ned Kelly story, with the Kelly Gang's last stand occurring at nearby Glenrowan in 1880.
The Eagles compete in the Goulburn Valley Football League and call Mansfield Recreation Reserve home. Visit the club at mansfieldfnc.com.au and follow on Facebook.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
