About Newport Football Club
Origins and Founding
Newport Football Club was established in 2019 and is affiliated with the Western Football Netball League (WFNL), based in Melbourne's western suburbs. The club was founded by a group of passionate locals determined to bring a new football community to the Newport and Altona North area. An earlier Newport team competed in the WFNL from 2016, winning the Division 3 premiership that year under the name Newport Power, before the current club was formally established in 2019 under the Panthers identity.
Club History
Newport played their first WFNL season in 2019, fielding a Senior and Reserves team in Division 2 of the competition. The club steadily built its playing list and supporter base, earning promotion through the grades over successive seasons. In 2025, the Panthers made their historic step up to WFNL Division 1 - the top grade of western suburban football - and went on to claim the Division 1 premiership in their inaugural season at that level. Heading into 2026, the Panthers are competing in Division 1 for a second consecutive season across five teams, including a new Supers (Over 35s) competition side.
Home Ground
The Panthers call A.W. Langshaw Reserve their home, a ground in Altona North that is sponsored as Angel Homes Oval. The reserve sits in the heart of the local community and provides facilities for both the football and netball arms of the club. The ground hosted Newport's first historic Division 1 match when Spotswood visited in Round 1 of the 2025 WFNL season.
Community and Programs
Newport Football Club has grown rapidly from a single-team operation to a multi-team community organisation. By 2026, the club fields five teams across the WFNL, catering to players from juniors through to the Over 35s Supers competition. The Panthers pride themselves on a club culture built on mateship, inclusion, and a love of the game, welcoming players, families, and supporters from across the Newport and Altona North communities.
Altona North
Altona North is a suburb in Melbourne's inner west, situated approximately 10 kilometres south-west of the Melbourne CBD within the City of Hobsons Bay. The suburb recorded a population of 12,962 at the 2021 census. Bordering Newport, Williamstown North, Yarraville, and Brooklyn, Altona North is a largely residential and light-industrial area known for the Paisley Park sporting complex and its proximity to Port Phillip Bay.
The Panthers compete in the WFNL Division 1 and call A.W. Langshaw Reserve (Angel Homes Oval), Altona North, home. Visit the club website for more information, follow them on Facebook, and follow them on Instagram for news and match day updates.
Footy Banner Information
Material: All Footy Banners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using permanent inks which will not run, even if they get wet. They are fully recyclable.
How to Use: We recommend taping broomsticks or plastic pipe to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it. If you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through. There are instructions and images for how to cut these in the FAQ section below.
On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon! This is why we do not pre-cut them, and also so you can get photographs with your intact banner when it looks at it's best.
Tip: Some players choose to only cut one weak spot in their banner so it can be saved and displayed later by taping it back together on the back.Pro Tip: Cut the weak spot to one side of the mascot or team logo so it stays intact as well!
