About Northcote Junior Football Club (Cougars)

Origins and Founding

The Northcote Junior Football Club - known as the Cougars - is the official junior club affiliated with the Northcote Park Football Club, which was founded in 1945 and has operated under the Northcote Park name since 1952. The junior program was formerly known as the Alphington Cougars Football Club before transitioning to the Northcote Junior Football Club name. The club is the only junior football club based in Northcote and serves the inner-northern suburbs of Melbourne including Northcote, Thornbury, Preston and adjacent areas.

Club History

The senior Northcote Park Football Club has won 17 premierships, including five as the Prince of Wales FC in its early years and later titles in 1957, 1977 to 1979, 1985, 1994, 1997, 1999 to 2002, and 2012. The run of four consecutive premierships from 1999 to 2002 was a record in the Northern Football League, only later equalled by Heidelberg from 2006 to 2009. Improved lighting was installed at Bill Lawry Oval in 2012, allowing night football on Friday and Saturday evenings. The senior club now competes in Division 2 of the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL). The junior club competes in the Yarra Junior Football League, drawing players from the same community catchment as the senior club.

Home Ground

The Northcote Cougars junior club is based at McDonell Park in Northcote, which serves as the home ground for training and match days. The senior club plays home matches at the adjacent Bill Lawry Oval - named in honour of the famous Australian cricket captain Bill Lawry, who is a long-time Northcote resident. The grounds are located approximately 6 kilometres north of the Melbourne CBD.

Community and Programs

The Northcote Junior Football Club has more than 300 players registered across its Auskick program and club teams, ranging in age from 5 to 18. More than 200 families make up the club's membership base. The club fields girls-only teams, mixed teams, and boys' teams across a range of age groups, with an emphasis on inclusion, child safety and community participation. The club is committed to creating pathways from Auskick right through to the senior grades at Northcote Park, and maintains active engagement with local schools in the area.

Northcote

Northcote is an inner-northern suburb of Melbourne situated approximately 6 kilometres north of the CBD, within the City of Darebin. The 2021 census recorded a population of approximately 21,000 residents. Known for its vibrant commercial strip along High Street, a diverse community, and strong arts and culture scene, Northcote has long been home to an engaged community that values local sporting clubs as an important part of neighbourhood life.

The Cougars compete in the Yarra Junior Football League and call McDonell Park, Northcote home. Visit the club at njfc.com.au and follow on Facebook.

    📄 Material & Construction

    • Premium Coated Paper (1.6 m high) printed with permanent, waterproof inks—won’t run or fade, even in wet weather.

    • Eco-friendly & Recyclable: All banners are fully recyclable when the celebration is over.

    • Durable weatherproof sports banners printed on heavy-duty coated paper - these banners are not made of crepe paper.

    🔧 Preparation & Run-Through Setup - Expert instructions for break-through milestone banners.

    • Rigging Your Banner

      • Tape broomsticks or PVC pipe to each edge to keep the banner taut.

      • This creates a professional “run-through” presentation for game-day moments.

    • Creating the Break-Through Slits

      • Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.

      • Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.

    💡 Tips & Tricks

    • Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.

    • Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.

  • Return and Refund Policy

As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
