About Old Eltham Collegians Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Old Eltham Collegians Football Netball Club - universally known as the Turtles - was established in the mid-1980s and competed in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) from 1986. The club was formed to provide a community football outlet for students and alumni of Eltham College, one of Melbourne's prominent independent schools located in the suburb of Eltham in the Shire of Nillumbik. "Old Collegians" clubs trace a long tradition in Australian football of alumni-based clubs that stay connected to their school through sport, and the Turtles have built a distinctive identity within that tradition, most notably through their quirky nickname and the famous "Turtle Dome" playing ground at Eltham College.
Club History
After more than three decades in the VAFA, the Turtles made the bold decision to join the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL) ahead of the 2019 season. As reported by the NFNL at the time, the club entered Division 3 "as an unknown quantity" after a tough final VAFA season in 2018. The Turtles recorded their first NFNL win against Lalor in Round 8 of 2019, and the move to a semi-professional competition transformed the club's culture and training standards. The club fields football sides in NFNL Division 3 as well as a netball program, competing across multiple grades each season.
Home Ground
The Turtles play their home games at the Eltham College oval, affectionately dubbed the "Turtle Dome" by club members and supporters. The ground is set within the expansive grounds of Eltham College in Eltham's leafy north-east suburbs, giving the club a unique and scenic home that reflects the area's famous green-wedge character. The connection between the club and the school remains central to its identity and membership base.
Community and Programs
The Old Eltham Collegians FNC fields both football and netball teams and maintains a strong connection to the Eltham College alumni network. The club has attracted players from across the NFNL with experience at Division 1 clubs, blending that experience with its community-first culture. The Turtles are committed to growing junior and women's football in the region, reflecting a broader ambition to expand beyond their alumni roots into the wider Eltham community.
Eltham
Eltham is a suburb of Melbourne, located approximately 20 kilometres north-east of the Central Business District within the Shire of Nillumbik local government area. The suburb recorded a population of 18,847 at the 2021 census and is known for its distinctive green-wedge character, with tree-lined streets and leafy reserves that set it apart from most Melbourne suburbs. Eltham is home to the Montsalvat artists colony and the Diamond Valley Railway, and has a long association with arts, nature, and alternative lifestyles alongside its community sport traditions.
The Turtles compete in the Northern Football Netball League and call the Turtle Dome at Eltham College home. Check the club's Facebook page and Instagram for news and match day updates.

Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
