About Paynesville Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Paynesville Football Netball Club - known as the Gulls - is one of East Gippsland's oldest clubs, with a history stretching back to 1894. The club's centenary publication, Paynesville Football Club centenary, 1894-1994, documents its first century of football in the region. From those earliest years, the club became deeply embedded in the social and sporting fabric of Paynesville and the surrounding Lakes District communities of East Gippsland.
Club History
The Gulls compete in the East Gippsland Football Netball League (EGFNL), which has governed senior football in the region for many decades. Among the club's significant achievements was the 1929 premiership, one of its earliest league titles, and the celebrated 1972 premiership, which remains a defining moment in the club's history. The 1972 flag in particular has been recalled with great pride by the Paynesville community. The club fields senior men's and women's football sides, as well as netball teams, making it a comprehensive football-netball club serving the broader Paynesville district.
Home Ground
The Gulls play their home matches at the club's ground in Paynesville, a scenic lakeside town in the Shire of East Gippsland. The ground draws supporters from across the local waterways and holiday communities that surround the town, particularly during the summer months when Paynesville's population swells with visitors and seasonal residents.
Community and Programs
The Paynesville Football Netball Club runs junior and senior programs across both football and netball, providing pathways for players of all ages from the Paynesville, Swan Reach, Bairnsdale, and surrounding communities.
