About Reservoir Mustangs
Origins and Founding
The Reservoir Sporting Club, home to the Mustangs, was founded in 1923 in the Melbourne suburb of Reservoir. The club initially competed in the Bourke-Evelyn Football League before moving through several competitions, including the Diamond Valley and Metropolitan football leagues, before settling permanently in the Northern Football League in 1981.
Club History
Over a century of football in Melbourne's north, the Mustangs have won eight senior premierships: 1946, 1947, 1959, 1972, 1975, 1976, 1984, and 2015. The 2015 flag was the club's most recent senior premiership and marked a significant moment for a club that had faced serious challenges in the 2000s, including a year in recess in 2007 before returning to competition in 2008. Since 2009, the club has competed in Division 3 of the Northern Football League. The Reservoir Colts junior program has produced a number of notable players who went on to VFL and AFL careers, including Trent Cotchin (Richmond Football Club), Ross Lyon (who became an AFL premiership coach with Fremantle and St Kilda), Gary Tredrea (Port Adelaide), and Jason Heatley.
Home Ground
The Mustangs play their home games at Crispe Park in Reservoir. The ground serves both the senior football program and the club's junior teams and has been the home of Reservoir football for many decades. Crispe Park is located within easy reach of public transport and is well-integrated into the local community precinct.
Community and Programs
The Reservoir Sporting Club's junior program - the Reservoir Colts - has been a key pipeline for player development in Melbourne's north. The club has maintained active participation across age groups and continues to offer football pathways for children and young adults in the Reservoir community. The club also has connections to local schools and community organisations, reflecting its century-long role as a northern suburb sporting institution.
Reservoir
Reservoir is a suburb located approximately 12 kilometres north of Melbourne's CBD in the City of Darebin. With a population of around 49,000 residents (2021 Census), Reservoir is one of Melbourne's larger and more densely populated inner-northern suburbs. Known for its multicultural community, Reservoir is well-served by the Mernda and South Morang train lines and is home to a vibrant range of community sports clubs, cafes, and local businesses. It borders Thomastown, Preston, Coburg North, and Fawkner.
