About Richmond Central AFC
Origins and Founding
Richmond Central Amateur Football Club was founded in 1987, making 2026 the club's 40th year of operation. Known as the Snakes, RCAFC is a community-driven club based in the inner-east Melbourne suburb of Richmond, competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). The club was established to provide competitive football for amateur players in the Richmond area, and has grown from a single-team operation into one of the VAFA's most active community clubs, fielding multiple men's and women's teams.
Club History
The Snakes have been based at Kevin Bartlett Reserve since 1991, having played at the Swinburne Junior Campus (locally known as "the Tip") during their first four seasons from 1987 to 1990. The club has built its identity around a culture of inclusion, mateship, and community, and has grown its membership substantially over nearly four decades. In 2025 RCAFC fielded three men's teams and one women's team, with over 180 players, coaches, and volunteers involved. In 2026, the club is celebrating its 40th anniversary season, reflecting the continuity and stability the Snakes have provided to the Richmond and Burnley community.
Home Ground
The Snakes play at Loughnan Oval within Kevin Bartlett Reserve, located on Yarra Boulevard, Richmond. The ground is named after Kevin Bartlett, the legendary Richmond Football Club player who is one of the most celebrated figures in VFL/AFL history. The reserve sits along the banks of the Yarra River in the heart of Richmond and is shared with other community sporting groups. Training takes place at Kevin Bartlett Reserve for men's teams on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and for the women's team on Monday and Thursday evenings.
Community and Programs
Richmond Central upholds the values of community, fun, and inclusion at its core. New players of all experience levels are welcomed, and the club prides itself on creating an environment where players from diverse backgrounds can enjoy Australian Rules Football. Men's teams compete in VAFA divisions across senior grades, while the women's program has grown significantly since its establishment. With over 180 people involved across playing and non-playing roles, the Snakes reflect the tight-knit community spirit that defines amateur football in Melbourne's inner suburbs.
Richmond
Richmond is one of Melbourne's most densely populated and culturally diverse inner-eastern suburbs, located approximately 3 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD. Known as the home of the AFL's Richmond Football Club, the suburb has a rich sporting heritage. Richmond sits immediately east of the CBD and is bounded by the Yarra River to the north and south, giving it a distinctive character as an urban riverside community. With a population of around 25,000 people, Richmond is known for its cafe and restaurant culture, historic terrace houses, and the vibrant activity of Swan Street and Bridge Road as commercial precincts.
