About Scoresby Magpies Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Scoresby Football Netball Club, known as the Magpies, was founded in 1925 when the Scoresby District Football Association was established in Melbourne's south-east. The club played its inaugural game on 9 May 1925 against Emerald, beginning a century of continuous involvement in eastern metropolitan and country Melbourne football. The ground used by the club, Exner Reserve, was named after Mr. Exner - a future club president who donated land for tennis courts and other facilities in the early years. The reserve on Stud Road in Scoresby has been the club's home for its entire existence. The club is affiliated with the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL).
Club History
After rejoining organised competition in 1946 following the World War II suspension of football, Scoresby won its first DDFA B Grade premiership in 1947. After moving through various league structures including the Eastern District Football League (EDFL), the Magpies won four consecutive EDFL 2nd Division premierships from 1962 to 1965, were elevated to 1st Division in 1966, and took out the EDFL 1st Division premiership in 1977. As the competition evolved into the EFL and then the EFNL, the Magpies remained committed. In 2024, the seniors and reserves both won EFNL Division 4 premierships. In 2025, the senior side went one better, winning the EFNL Division 3 premiership and earning promotion to Division 2 for the 2026 season - a remarkable back-to-back rise through the league. The netball program also won the Division 14 premiership in 2025.
Home Ground
Exner Reserve on Stud Road in Scoresby has been the club's permanent home since 1925. The ground is named after Mr. Exner, an early club president who donated land adjacent to the oval in the 1920s. A $160,000 clubroom redevelopment was completed in 1994 and a $300,000 ground redevelopment followed in 2002, reflecting the community's long-term investment in the facility. The reserve also houses the Scoresby Tennis Club, which has been a co-tenant since 1928.
Community and Programs
The Scoresby Football Netball Club runs senior men's, reserves, under-19.5, veterans, and netball programs. The club restarted its junior program in 2026 following a period of restructuring, reflecting renewed grassroots growth in the area. The club has a long tradition of community involvement spanning 100 years, with generations of families from the Scoresby and Ferntree Gully corridor participating in both football and netball.
Scoresby
Scoresby is a suburb in Melbourne's south-east, approximately 30 kilometres from the CBD, within the City of Knox. It recorded a population of approximately 4,000 at the 2021 census. The suburb sits between Knoxfield and Boronia and is characterised by a mix of residential housing and commercial/industrial precincts. The local area has undergone significant growth since the mid-20th century as part of Melbourne's expanding eastern fringe, and the Scoresby Magpies have been central to community life throughout that transformation.
