About Whitehorse Colts
Origins and Founding
The Whitehorse Colts Junior Football and Netball Club is based at Springfield Park in Box Hill North, in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. The club was established to provide junior Australian rules football pathways for children across the City of Whitehorse, competing in the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL). The club is affiliated with St Francis Xavier College and is registered with AFL Victoria. By 2011, the Colts were fielding teams from Under 9s through to Under 17s, including a girls team, reflecting strong community demand from the outset.
Club History
The Whitehorse Colts have developed a reputation as one of Melbourne's east's premier junior pathways clubs. The club competes across multiple age groups in the YJFL, which is recognised as a key grassroots pathway for emerging AFL talent. In 2014 the club expanded into netball, fielding its first netball team in the EFNL's newly launched netball competition, and the club's full name was updated to the Whitehorse Colts Football and Netball Club. The club produced AFL draftee Andy Otten, who was selected with pick 27 in the 2007 AFL National Draft by the Adelaide Crows from Whitehorse Colts JFC and Whitefriars College. Otten went on to play 109 AFL games across his career and as of 2025 serves as VFL head coach at Collingwood.
Home Ground
The Colts train and play at Springfield Park on Springfield Road in Box Hill North. Springfield Park is one of two reserves in the suburb with an Australian rules football oval, alongside Elgar Park. The ground provides purpose-built facilities for the club's expanding program. A new Netball Cricket Multi-purpose pavilion was completed at Springfield Park, significantly upgrading facilities for the club's growing netball and cricket programs and the wider community.
Community and Programs
The Whitehorse Colts run a broad junior program catering to players from Auskick age through to Under 17s, with boys and girls teams across multiple age groups. The club's netball program competes in the EFNL netball competition, which launched in 2014. The Colts are a family-oriented club known for their inclusive culture and strong volunteer base. The club partners with local businesses through sponsorship arrangements and holds regular community events including registration days, end-of-season celebrations, and in-school promotional activities to attract new participants from the Box Hill North area.
Box Hill North
Box Hill North is a residential suburb in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, located 14 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD within the City of Whitehorse. The suburb recorded a population of 12,337 at the 2021 census. Much of the area was developed during the post-World War II suburban expansion, transforming former orchards and dairy farms into a family-oriented community. Box Hill North is bordered by Koonung Creek to the north, Elgar Road to the west, and Middleborough Road to the east, and is well connected to nearby commercial hubs including Box Hill Central and Westfield Doncaster.
