About Yallourn Yallourn North Football Netball Club

Origins and Founding

The Yallourn Yallourn North Football Netball Club, known as the Jets, was formed in 1977 when the Yallourn Football Club merged with the Yallourn North Football Club following the 1976 season. The merger was directly linked to the closure of the Yallourn township by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), which progressively demolished the purpose-built coal company town during the 1970s to expand brown coal mining operations in the Latrobe Valley. Residents were relocated to nearby Yallourn North, and the two football clubs - both with their own strong traditions - combined to ensure that football continued for the community under unified colours.

The club is based at George Bates Reserve in Yallourn North - a ground named in honour of George Bates, the former general manager of the SECV who was also a long-serving servant of the Yallourn Football Club. The ground itself originated as the Yallourn No. 1 Oval in the old township before being transferred to Yallourn North as part of the closure package.

Club History

After the 1977 merger, the Yallourn Yallourn North (YYN) Jets competed in the Mid Gippsland Football League (MGFL) for several decades, building a strong record across the Mid Gippsland competition. In 2021, the Jets made a significant structural change by leaving the MGFL and joining the North Gippsland Football Netball League (NGFNL). The move was one of the most significant in the competition's recent history, and the Jets wasted little time establishing themselves, winning the 2022 NGFNL senior premiership in just their second season in the league. The Jets now compete in the NGFNL as one of the competition's stronger clubs, with women's and netball programs continuing to develop alongside the senior football sides.

Home Ground

The Jets play at George Bates Reserve, located on North Road in Yallourn North, VIC. The reserve carries significant historical meaning for the local community - it was the sporting heart of the old Yallourn township before the town's demolition and was transferred to Yallourn North as part of the SECV's relocation commitment to displaced residents. The ground is the principal sports facility for the Yallourn North area and hosts home games for all the club's teams across football and netball.

Community and Programs

The YYN FNC is the primary sporting and community club for the Yallourn North district in the heart of the Latrobe Valley. The club fields senior men's, reserves, women's football, and netball sides, and operates junior football pathways aligned with AFL Gippsland's development programs. The club's community role carries additional weight given the historical context of the Yallourn township closure, with the Jets representing a community that was physically relocated and rebuilt over the course of the 1970s.

Yallourn North

Yallourn North is a small township in the Latrobe Valley region of Gippsland, Victoria, located approximately 140 kilometres east of Melbourne in the Latrobe City local government area. The town is closely associated with the history of brown coal mining and power generation in the Latrobe Valley, centred on the Loy Yang power station and the broader coal industry infrastructure. Yallourn North grew significantly in the 1970s as residents were relocated from the demolished Yallourn township. The area remains strongly tied to its working-class industrial heritage and its Gippsland football traditions.

The Jets compete in the North Gippsland Football Netball League (NGFNL) and play at George Bates Reserve, Yallourn North VIC. Follow the club on Facebook.

    • Premium Coated Paper (1.6 m high) printed with permanent, waterproof inks—won’t run or fade, even in wet weather.

    🔧 Preparation & Run-Through Setup - Expert instructions for break-through milestone banners.

    • Rigging Your Banner

      • Tape broomsticks or PVC pipe to each edge to keep the banner taut.

      • This creates a professional “run-through” presentation for game-day moments.

    • Creating the Break-Through Slits

      • Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.

      • Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.

    💡 Tips & Tricks

    • Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.

    • Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
