About Tyabb Yabbies
Origins and Founding
The Tyabb Football Netball Club was first formed in 1899, making it one of the oldest clubs on the Mornington Peninsula. The club became a foundation member of the Peninsula Football Association when that body was established in 1908. In the early years of the Peninsula District Football Association, the Yabbies were highly competitive, claiming three consecutive premierships in 1921, 1922, and 1923. The club later merged with neighbouring Hastings during the district football era before disbanding in 1952.
Club History
After almost 25 years in recess, members of the Tyabb Cricket Club reformed the football club in 1977, joining the Nepean Football League. That same year, the Tyabb Junior Football Club was founded alongside the reforming seniors. The senior club added a fourth premiership in 1932 and then celebrated again in 2000, defeating Keysborough in the Nepean Division Grand Final with the reserves also finishing top of the ladder that year. The Tyabb Football Club officially became the Tyabb Football Netball Club around 2011, incorporating netball from 2010 when the first two senior netball teams were fielded. The netball program has since won premierships in 2012, 2014, and 2015, the 2014 A Grade team going through the season undefeated. In 2022 the club faced its long-time rivals Mornington in the first senior encounter between the two clubs in 107 years, a match that drew significant local attention. The Yabbies compete in Division 2 of the Mornington Peninsula Football Netball League (MPNFL).
Home Ground
The Yabbies play at Bunguyan Reserve in Tyabb. The reserve has hosted the club since its reformation in 1977 and serves as the home base for both football and netball programs. The ground sits within the broader Tyabb township, which is set against a backdrop of orchards, rural properties, and the historic character of the Mornington Peninsula hinterland.
Community and Programs
The club runs a comprehensive community program through the Tyabb Junior Football Netball Club, which was formally incorporated in 2025. The junior program fields teams from Auskick through to Under 16s, with girls teams formed in partnership with neighbouring clubs Somerville (forming the Westernport Pumas) and Pearcedale. The junior club's Under 16s won a Grand Final in 2024, coached by Mark Stewart, defeating Cranbourne. The Mat Hose family legacy is particularly notable - Mat Hose has played 250-plus senior games for the club and continues in coaching and committee roles, representing the club's multi-generational commitment to community football.
Tyabb
Tyabb is a small town on the Mornington Peninsula, located 53 kilometres south-east of Melbourne's CBD within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula. The town recorded a population of 3,449 at the 2021 census. Historically a fruit-growing area, Tyabb is today well known for its antique shops, including the Tyabb Packing House Antique complex housed in a historic cool store. The town is also home to Tyabb Airport, operated by the Peninsula Aero Club, which hosts an internationally recognised air show every second year.

Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
